Life At College – Balancing Dating And Classes
The dating scene can be difficult for anyone to balance, but even more so for a college student. Dating, if not handled properly, can become an obstacle in the way of class and study time, and even affect a student’s job.
Most of the time when a teen enters college, he or she is no stranger to dating. However, a teen in a high school dating relationship won’t always be ready for the juggling act that a college dating relationship requires. According to US studies, most college students begin seriously dating at some point during their first year. Unfortunately, a dating student may soon find themselves conflicting with a teacher, class schedule, or work schedule.
Many students often find themselves becoming conflicted when it comes to college dating. They enter a relationship with little thought for their college academic responsibilities. It is estimated that over half of all students who begin a serious college dating relationship, will need to repeat one or more classes at the end of their first year.
Another epidemic in the college dating scene is the tendency to find a teacher dating a student. Although not illegal, as so many of the most prominent teacher/student relationships have been; it is certainly unethical, and is against the policies of most colleges and universities.
College dating can also be undesirable by many students. A number of students only wish to use their college years for obtaining the best possible education; and so refuse to date at all. This is actually a rather wise approach to college dating relationships. When you take into account the amount of money being spent on your education, allowing anything to interfere with that education seems pointless.
It is, however, important to form relationships in college, even if it is not through dating. A teen may soon find him or herself quite isolated if he or she is unable to form any meaningful relationships with other students. A teacher may be able to offer suggestions for dating alternatives to a student. Social networking is an important part of the college experience, and dating doesn’t always have to factor into that.
If you are in college for the first time, and are interested in meeting new people without dating, there are a number of websites available that allow college student to form bonds that don’t involve the dating scene. If you do choose to start dating while you are in college, remember that it is of vital importance to set your priorities ahead of time. Ask a teacher, or student advisor, for advice on how to handle a dating relationship.
The most important thing to remember when in a college dating relationship is that, if you feel like the pressure of the relationship is becoming more important than college, it may be time to end the relationship. Teens need to understand that, while friends are great, sometimes dating can be the worst possible thing to do in college.
